| MPLS enables broadcasting |
Multicasting within MPLS IP VPN provides an easy way of delivering video and audio to sites and staff across the country. Until recently, the systems have been optimised for one-to-one communications, such as videoconferencing. What happens if you want to provide online training to tens or hundreds of staff/customers, or if you want to organise online seminars? You can do it by buying a large server, which is able to cope with many video connections simultaneously, but that's an expensive proposition. Also, how can you be sure that the server is big enough and you have enough bandwidth to add as many participants as you want, when you want?
Multicast is a technology that brings the efficiency of broadcast to the private environment of a MPLS IP VPN. Instead of having to buy a large pipe into the network to send the same traffic multiple times, the network takes care of the job. All the server has to do is identify who should receive the information and it will then be copied to every site/user that wishes to receive it. It is more efficient, saves bandwidth and server time and can deal with audiences of any size.
